Are you ready to go beyond?Job Overview:X-ray diffraction (XRD) plays a critical role in new material design and development, engine safety/failure analysis, manufacturing process optimization, and quality control. The Materials Characterization Team is seeking an Engineer to develop and apply X-ray diffraction tools (such as phase identification, phase quantification, crystallographic texture analysis, line profile analysis, strain and stress measurements) to various aerospace materials linking microstructural/crystallographic features to jet engine hardware performance.The Engineer will collaborate with inter-disciplinary teams across Pratt and Whitney, such as new Materials Development, Failure Analysis, Design/Structures, Quality, and Manufacturing. The candidate will solve complex problems impacting new materials technology development, determining root cause for Engine Safety and Field Investigations, and Manufacturing support issues.The candidate will work closely with a team of experts to define how to develop novel characterization solutions to solve these problems, execute to plan, where results are often unexpected and require further investigations and collaboration.Key Responsibilities:Partner with team members and internal collaborators to define phase identification/quantification and texture data need.Then, develop and execute the plan on-time and using agreed-upon resourcesExecute data collection and analysis of using in-house diffractometers or via external collaborationsCollaborate with universities/suppliers/government institutions to expand current available capabilities and develop state-of-the-art methods to implement into practiceSupport the XRD Knowledge Generation and Transfer to ensure effective retention of learnings and findingsBasic Qualifications:BS in Materials Science or Metallurgical or Mechanical Engineering and 5 years prior experienceExperience with XRD measurement and analysis; or Advanced Degree in a related field andminimum 3 years experienceUS Citizen or US Person Status required due to government contractPreferred Qualifications:Experience with the X-ray diffraction data collection strategies (Bragg-Brentano, parallel beam, micro-diffraction, grazing angle diffraction, etc.) and optics (divergent optics, mirrors, monochromators, mono-, poly-capillaries, collimators, point/line/area detectors, etc.)Experience with the X-ray diffraction data analysis (Phase ID, Rietveld refinement, Strain/Stress measurement, crystallographic orientation and texture measurements, line profile analysis, etc.)6-Sigma Green Belt CertificationAerospace industry experience is an assetWhat is my role type?In addition to transforming the future of flight, we are also transforming how and where we work.
