Description: The primary purpose of the Unit Manager is to
supervise the overall operation of nursing activities. Such
supervision must be in accordance with current Federal, State, and
local standards, guidelines, and regulations. This ensures that the
highest degree of care is maintained at all times. DEPARTMENTAL
EXPECTATION OF EMPLOYEE Adheres to policies and procedures. Acts as
a role model within and outside of the organization. Performs
duties as workload necessitates. Maintains a positive and
respectful attitude. Demonstrates flexible and efficient time
management and the ability to prioritize workload. Consistently
reports to work on time and prepared to perform duties of the
position. Meets Department productivity standards. Adheres to
Department dress code. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Ensure
that Nursing Reference Material on the Unit is appropriately
utilized and maintained. Assist in developing, implementing, and
periodically updating the written procedures for the Discharge
Planning Program. Assist in planning the Nursing Services portion
of the resident's discharge plan. Participate in audits of clerical
records as designated. Participate in survey inspections made by
authorized government agencies. Attend all meetings as scheduled.
Participate in weekly wound rounds. Oversee weekly measurements of
vascular wounds. Document monthly wound progress notes. Maintain an
accurate matrix and condition report. Oversee documentation and
ensure adequate reporting by Team Leaders. Instruct and delegate
tasks to the Team Leaders. Invite residents to scheduled meetings
in coordination with social services. Be responsible for Infection
Control Surveillance Rounds and Infection Control listings for the
assigned unit. Submit follow-up reports in a timely manner. Attend
daily meetings and provide a Unit report. Listen to reports from
Team Leaders and set expectations. Assess resident needs with Team
Leaders during daily rounds. Review documentation for compliance.
Monitor documentation for compliance related to resident care.
Ensure day-to-day functioning of the unit. Attend in-services and
monthly Nursing management meetings. Oversee and order supplies for
the unit in conjunction with Team Leaders. Assist in the
orientation of new personnel. Assist in competency testing. Hold
regular unit meetings for staff communication. Participate in
maintaining a Quality Assurance Program for the Nursing Services
Department. Abide by the Standards of Conduct. Ensure compliance
with Health Information privacy laws and regulations. Help
establish resident-centered care plans that are comprehensive and
up to date. COMMITTEE FUNCTIONS Attend various committee meetings
as required. Schedule, attend, and participate in developing
meetings in collaboration with social services. Assist in
evaluating and implementing recommendations from established
committees as directed. PERSONNEL FUNCTIONS Work in conjunction
with the Staff Planner to acquire staff for open positions.
Participate in staff rotation as needed. Supervise shifts as
needed. Conduct daily rounds of assigned units to ensure personnel
are performing assignments satisfactorily. Participate in the
evaluation of unit personnel's job performance. Ensure supervisors
are aware of changes in resident condition and unit happenings.
Assist in reviewing complaints and grievances filed by department
personnel. Make necessary reports to management as required. Assist
in ensuring fair disciplinary actions in conjunction with Nursing
Administration. Participate in the interview process for new hires.
NURSING CARE FUNCTIONS Answer call lights. Inform nursing personnel
of new admissions and their expected time of arrival. Ensure rooms
are ready for new admissions. Greet newly admitted residents.
Review nurses' notes for clarity and informativeness. Round with
physicians as necessary. Ensure timely recording of progress notes
and physician orders. Make daily resident visits to observe and
evaluate needs. Monitor medication passes and treatment schedules
for compliance. Review medication sheets for accuracy and
completeness. Provide direct nursing care as necessary. Assist team
nurses with admissions and orders as needed. Collaborate with
nursing leadership to address problem areas and implement
corrective action. Keep leadership informed of resident status and
related matters through written and oral reports. Ensure compliance
with procedures for the administration and control of medications.
Meet with residents and/or family members as necessary. Report
problem areas to leadership. Inspect treatment areas daily for
cleanliness and safety. Consult with residents' physicians in
planning care. Notify physicians and family members of changes in
resident conditions. Work with consultants to implement authorized
changes. Make independent decisions concerning nursing care. Start
IVs, administer IV medications, and obtain lab tests as necessary.
Assist staff in monitoring seriously ill residents. Inform family
members of resident death as necessary. STAFF DEVELOPMENT
Participate in developing and scheduling in-service training and
orientation classes. Provide leadership training for staff.
