SUMMARY The primary purpose of the Unit Manager is to supervise the
overall operation of nursing activities of the assigned unit. Such
supervision must be in accordance with current Federal, State, and
local standards, guidelines, and regulations that govern the
facility to ensure that the highest degree of care is maintained at
all times. DEPARTMENTAL EXPECTATION OF EMPLOYE Adheres to MI's

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other
duties may be assigned. Ensure that Nursing Reference Material on
the Unit (PDR's, Drug Manuals, Policy/Procedure Manuals, etc.) are
appropriately utilized and maintained to thus meet the day to day
care needs of the resident. Assist the Director of Social Services
in developing, implementing and periodically updating the written
procedures for the Discharge Planning Program. Assist the Director
of Social Services in planning the Nursing Services portion of the
resident's discharge plan. Participate in audits of clerical
records as designated by Nursing Administration. Participate in
survey inspections made by authorized government agencies. Will
attend all IDC, Family and Discharge meetings as scheduled.
Participate in weekly Wound Rounds. Oversees weekly measurements of
vascular wounds. Documents monthly wound progress notes. Maintains
and accurate matrix and condition report. Will oversee Medicare
documentation, shift notes and behavior notes and is responsible to
see that adequate documentation is being provided by Team Leaders.
Instruct and delegate to the Team Leaders. Invites residents, in
coordination with Social Service, to scheduled meetings (ie IDC,
discharge planning). Responsible for Infection Control Surveillance
Rounds and Infection Control listing for assigned unit. Responsible
for follow-up on I/A report with submission to Nursing Office in a
24-hour time frame. Attends daily huddle and gives a Unit report.
Listen to report in AM with Team Leaders. Sets expectation to Team
Leaders for the day. Team Leader will give report to the C.N.A.s.
Ensure shift compliance with 24 hour green report log. Assess
resident needs with Team Leaders during daily rounds. Review MMQ
documentation (i.e. progress notes, flow sheets, Norton scales).
Monitor C.N.A. flow sheets, progress notes, and weights for
compliance (also to be involved in MMQ process). Responsible for
the 24 hour day to day functioning of the unit. Attend in-services
and monthly Nursing management meetings. Oversight and ordering of
supplies for the unit including clean utility room, OTC,
medications, and treatment cart, in conjunction with Team Leaders.
Assist in orientation of new personnel. Assist in competency
testing. Holds regular unit meetings for all shifts to enhance
staff communication. Participate in maintaining an ongoing Quality
Assurance Program for the Nursing Services Department. Abide by the
Standards of Conduct which is the basis for the Organizational
Integrity Program. Compliance with Health Information privacy
(HIPPA) related laws and regulations. Help to establish resident
centered care plans that are comprehensive and up to date.
COMMITTEE FUNCTIONS Attend various committee meetings of the
facility, i.e., Department head, Falls, Risk, Quality Assurance,
etc., as required, and as appointed by the DON. Schedule, attend,
and participate in developing IDC meetings as necessary in
collaboration with Social Services. Assist in evaluating and
implementing recommendations from established committees as they
pertain to Nursing Services, as directed by the DON. PERSONNEL
FUNCTIONS Work in conjunction with the Staff Planner to acquire
staff to fill open positions. Participates in 'team' rotation as
needed. May assist in supervising of shifts as needed and able.
Make daily rounds of assigned Nursing Unit(s) to ensure that all
Nursing Service personnel are performing their working assignments
in accordance with acceptable nursing standards and resident care
plans. Participate in the evaluation of unit personnel's job
performance. Ensures day and off shift supervisors are aware of
changes in resident condition and unit happenings as needed. Assist
in reviewing complaints and grievances made or filed by department
personnel. Make appropriate reports to the DON as required or as
may be necessary, including departmental performance evaluations.
Assist in ensuring that disciplinary action is administered fairly
in conjunction with Nursing Administration. Participates in the
interview process for new hires. NURSING CARE FUNCTIONS Answer call
lights. Inform nursing personnel of new admissions, their expected
time of arrival, room assignments, etc. Ensure that rooms are ready
for new admissions. Greet newly admitted residents upon admission.
Escort to room as necessary. Review nurses' notes to ensure that
they are informative and descriptive of the nursing care being
provided and that they reflect the resident's response to the care.
Round with physicians as necessary. Ensure that attending
physicians record and sign progress notes, physicians' orders,
etc., on a timely basis and in accordance with current regulations.
Make daily resident visits to observe and evaluate the residents'
physical and emotional needs. Monitor medication passes and
treatment schedules to ensure that medications are being
administered as ordered and that treatments are provided as
scheduled. Review medication sheets for completeness of
information, accuracy in the transcription of physician orders, and
adherence to stop order policies. Provide direct nursing care as
necessary. Assist team nurses with admissions, MD orders, etc. as
needed. Collaborate with Director and Assistant Director of Nursing
to discuss problem areas and develop and implement corrective
action. Keep the Assistant Director of Nursing informed of the
status of residents and other related matters through written/oral
reports. Ensure that our written procedures for the administration,
storage, and control of medications and supplies are being followed
by all RN's and LPN's on all three shifts. Meet with residents
and/or family members as necessary. Report problem areas to the
Assistant Director or Director of Nursing. Inspect the nursing
treatment areas daily to ensure that they are maintained in a clean
and safe manner. Consult with the resident's physician in planning
resident care, treatment, rehabilitation, etc., as necessary.
Notify the resident's attending physician and next-of-kin when
there is a change in the resident's condition, as necessary. Work
with the facility's consultants and implement those changes
authorized by the Director. Make independent decisions concerning
nursing care. Start IVs, administer IV medications, obtain cultures
and other lab tests as ordered, and obtain vital signs as
necessary. Assist the Staff Nurse in monitoring seriously ill
residents. Inform family members of the death of resident as
necessary. STAFF DEVELOPMENT Participate in the development,
planning and scheduling of in-service training and orientation
classes that provide instructions on \"how to do the job\", and
ensure a well-educated nursing services department. Provide
leadership training that includes the administrative and
supervisory principles essential for Staff Nurses. Encourage Staff
Nurses to attend and participate in training programs. Schedule
staff as appropriate. Assist support services in developing and
implementing in-service training programs that relate to the
Nursing Department. Attend and participate in continuing
educational programs designed to keep you abreast of changes in
your profession, as well as to maintain your license on a current
status. SAFETY AND SANITATION Assist in developing safety standards
for the Nursing Department as necessary. Monitor shift personnel to
ensure that they are following established safety regulations in
the use of equipment and supplies. Ensure that nursing work areas,
i.e., nurses' stations, medicine room, computer area, nourishment
kitchen, linen room, utility room, etc. are maintained in a clean
and sanitary manner. Ensure that nursing personnel participate in
and conduct all fire safety and disaster preparedness drills in a
safe and professional manner. Participate in the development,
implementation, and maintenance of the procedure for reporting
hazardous conditions and equipment. Ensure that nursing personnel
follow established hand washing techniques in the administering of
nursing care procedures. Maintain an awareness of current infection
control policies and principles and ensure personnel are in
compliance. Ensure surveillance rounds are conducted as scheduled.
Ensure that all Nursing service personnel follow established
departmental policies and procedures, including appropriate dress
codes (including badges in alignment with state regulation
requirements). EQUIPMENT AND SUPPLY FUNCTIONS Recommend to the
Director of Nursing the equipment and supply needs of the unit.
Assist in ensuring that a stock level of medications, medical
supplies, equipment, etc., is maintained on premises at all times
to adequately meet the needs of the residents. Participate in the
development and implementation of the procedures for the safe
operation of all nursing service equipment. Ensure that only
trained and authorized personnel operate the unit's/ department's
equipment, safely. Monitor nursing procedures to ensure that
nursing service supplies are used in an efficient and cost
effective manner. Responsible for fiscal management of supplies
used on unit. RESIDENT RIGHTS FUNCTIONS Maintain the
confidentiality of all resident care information. Assist Social
Services in assuring that appropriate notices are given to the
residents before their room or roommate is changed. Monitor nursing
care to assure that all residents are treated fairly, and with
kindness, dignity and respect. Ensure that Nursing Service
personnel are knowledgeable of resident rights and
